Parallel Universes: 1970–1985
24 July – 4 August 2012

The Block Gallery
QUT Creative Industries Precinct
Brisbane, Australia

Parallel Universes: 1970 – 1985, explores historic video art and the specific vernacular developed at different geographic locations: Australia, U.S.A., U.K. and Japan. The exhibition will explore the commonalities and differences, within broad conceptual frameworks, between the works produced in these regions. The impetus for this show has come about from discussions regarding the highly visible genre of video art, as part of the contemporary art canon, to which students, academics, artists and curators, at all levels of educational and professional practice, are responding to. However, even with this abundance of activity and interest, there remains a distinct difficulty in both accessing historic video art and opportunities to experience these works within an exhibition context. Artists selected include Stephen Jones, Mike Parr, Nam June Paik and Bill Viola.
